Receives 2023 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award
This year’s recipient of the overcoming adversity award has volunteered with Maryland District AAU, the Madison Square Buccaneers, and the Baltimore Stars AAU coalition for more than 25 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the university of Maryland college park and a Master’s Degree from Morgan State University. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority incorporated. and she is currently a Development Consultant with the State of Maryland Community Development Administration.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she endured three related surgeries. soon after her first surgery, she volunteered at the 2022 AAU World Basketball Championships at McDaniel College.
With the help of medical professionals, family, friends, and lots of prayer, she is a survivor. throughout her journey, with faith and perseverance, she continued to fulfill her role as a St. James Episcopal Church Reader, treasurer of St. James Development Corporation, and Co-coordinator of the St. James Angel Tree Project.
Here today to support her are Lelya “Gigi-Georgeous Grandma” Coleman, her sister Natalie, her son in-law Walter and her husband of 25 years, Gary.
