Hansberry Moore Honored

Receives 2021 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

Hansberry Moore, a native Baltimorean is a dedicated and committed volunteer with the Maryland District AAU.  Hansberry has served in the role of Maryland District assistant commissioner, Sports Director for Baseball and Softball.

He has attended several AAU National Conventions and the leadership conferences. In addition to his volunteer work with AAU, Hansberry was affiliated with Northwood Baseball League for nearly twenty years where he held positions of Board Member and Coach. 

Hansberry was employed with Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) Operations Safe Kids. He retired from BCHD with nearly 20 years of service. Prior to his employment with BCHD, Hansberry was employed with the Charles Hickey School for Boys. He is currently employed as a Recreation Assistant with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks. 

In October 2020, Hansberry was disgnosed with COVID. His disease progressed rapidly causing him to be placed on advanced life support and eventually on a ventilator. After 2 months in the hospital, Hansberry was transferred to Levindale Rehabilitation Hospital where he stayed for three months.  After a 5-month hospital stay, Hansberry overcame his battle with COVID- 19 and was discharged to go home with his family. 

After nearly 8 months of illness and rehabilitation, Hansberry returned to his employment with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks.  Where he has a daily impact on the lives of the youth enrolled in the recreation programs.

He is married to Sonia Moore, blended family of seven children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
