Youth, Legacy, and Community Take Center Stage at 3nd Annual Maryland District AAU "Legendary" Memorial Day Basketball Camp

Baltimore, MD — On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Maryland District of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), in partnership with Dundalk Community College and Athletic Director Mr. Greate White, hosted the 3rd Annual “Legendary” Memorial Day Free Basketball Camp for boys and girls.

This growing event—originally envisioned by MD AAU Governor Benjamin DuBose—celebrates the lives and legacies of deceased iconic Maryland basketball coaches who dedicated themselves to uplifting youth through sports. This year, the honoree list grew from six to eight legendary coaches whose impact continues to shape generations of athletes.

“The goal of this camp is bigger than basketball,” said DuBose. “We want these young players to learn not just the fundamentals of the game, but also the importance of teamwork, discipline, education, and knowing the shoulders they stand on.”

Young athletes spent the day sharpening their skills, enjoying team-building activities, and receiving personal instruction from top coaches and special guests—all at no cost. Campers were treated to free lunch, take-home souvenirs, and an experience designed to inspire both on and off the court.

A highlight of the day was keynote speaker Choo Smith, former Harlem Globetrotter and President of the NBA Retired Players Association. Smith didn’t just speak—he played, coached, and entertained. His legendary ball-handling dazzled the crowd, and his message of perseverance and purpose left a lasting impression.

The event also paused for a moving tribute to the two newest members of the “Legendary” honorees:
• Coach James Wise, longtime Coach at Baltimore’s Chick Webb Recreation Center
• Coach Carlton “Bub” Carrington, Coach at Team Baltimore Elite
Their wives, Mrs. Fern Wise and Mrs. Karima Carrington, accepted framed portraits and floral tributes in their memory.

Also honored was the incomparable Coach Edward Wilson of Severna Park, Maryland. With over 70 years of service to Maryland’s youth, he was still coaching when he received Special Recognition at an AAU World Championship Tournament at 93 years old. Coach Wilson’s lifetime dedication continues to inspire.

“This camp is a labor of love,” DuBose added. “Thanks to Greate White, the staff at Randallstown Community Center, and the amazing MD AAU team, we made it special. Seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces says everything. And we’re already planning to make next year even bigger.”
